We are Dogwood, Shrew and Albi and this is our new website. This website is still being constructed, but will be completely online soon. If you register, you can create a profile for yourself, with pictures of your guinea pigs for everyone to see. I hope you enjoy this site. If you have any comments or questions, please use the contact form to get in touch.
We want to tell you what it is like being a guinea pig, what we like to eat and where we like to live. As well as this, we’ll give you loads of info about our health, looking after us and generally what’s important about keeping guinea pigs.
First of all, let’s introduce ourselves better. We live in Ringstead, UK together with two big dogs, two cats and two humans.
Most people call us guinea pigs, although officially we are known as cavies, but either name is OK. By the way, our scientific name is Cavia porcellus, which means pig-like cavy in Latin. Guinea pigs are rodents, which mean we share the same family as rabbits, rats, mice and gerbils.
Guinea pigs originally came from Peru in South America. It’s thought we got our name from the country of Guyana, where we were put onto ships bound for Europe by Spanish sailors. Sailors used to keep us as pets on boards ships, as we are easy to look after, friendly, and also (sadly) OK to eat if the ship ran into trouble.
Now guinea pigs are kept as pets all over the world, from the US to Australia. We make good pets, as we are friendly and easy to handle. We don’t dig up gardens like our friends the rabbits, although we will eat a lot of garden plants if you aren’t careful (in fact, we’ll eat almost anything!). So welcome to our website, and we'll tell you more…
